Dutch Far Right Leader Wilders Signals Openness To Military Support For Ukraine

Dutch far-right leader Wilders signals openness to military support for Ukraine

Wilders, whose party won the most votes in last year's elections, has previously opposed arms supplies to Ukraine.

However, he indicated a willingness to consider changing his position in an interview on Thursday.

AMSTERDAM, Feb 24 (Reuters) - Dutch far-right leader Geert Wilders signalled he was willing to consider future military support for Ukraine, a shift from his previous opposition to arms supplies.

Wilders, whose Freedom Party (PVV) won the most votes in last year's general election, has been a vocal critic of Ukraine's government and has opposed Western military support for Kyiv.

However, in an interview with Dutch broadcaster NOS on Thursday, Wilders said he was willing to reconsider his position if Russia continued to escalate its aggression against Ukraine.

"If Russia continues to attack Ukraine, then we must also consider military support," Wilders said.

Wilders' comments come as the Dutch government has come under increasing pressure to provide military support to Ukraine. Last week, the Netherlands announced it would send 100 troops to train Ukrainian forces in Poland.

However, the Dutch government has so far resisted calls to send weapons to Ukraine, citing concerns about escalating the conflict.

Wilders' shift in position could put pressure on the Dutch government to reconsider its stance on military support for Ukraine.
