War Crimes in Yugoslavia

A Dark Chapter in History

During and after World War II, Yugoslavia was plagued by horrific war crimes. In 1991 and 1992, Slovenia, Croatia, Macedonia (FYROM), and Bosnia-Herzegovina declared independence, sparking a series of conflicts that would leave an indelible mark on the region.

Tribunal for War Crimes

In response to the atrocities committed, the United Nations Security Council established the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY) in 1993. The ICTY was tasked with prosecuting and punishing individuals responsible for war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide during the Yugoslav Wars.

Prosecuting War Criminals

The ICTY has been instrumental in bringing some of the most notorious war criminals to justice. Former Serbian President Slobodan Milosevic, Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic, and Croatian general Ante Gotovina are just a few of the high-profile individuals who have been convicted by the tribunal.
